A forest avenue of yews, aligned with the sunset on the longest day of the year (24 June 2000). One end opens to the west and the sunset, the other is closed and has an observation point in the middle at coordinate point 0°55'18"E, 51°12'44"N, marked by a stone on which the observer can sit. On the longest day, the sun should be visible from the closed end of the avenue, framed by trees as in a tunnel. The avenue is X-shaped.

Life on Earth exists due to solar energy. Via Lucem Continens is a photosynthetic reminder of our dependence on the cosmic ecosystem. It is a symbolic accumulator, storing solar energy. Via Lucem Continens is a concept of architectural character. You could call it 'forest architecture' by analogy with 'park architecture'.

Technical symbolism is the only one I've worked with on Via Lucem Continens.

Time Walk

The action of time is essential in this work. It isn't just symbolic: time is the constructing factor, an actual part of the work. Time Walk develops slowly in time, during a period whose length is difficult to imagine. The period of the avenue's development makes people aware of the timescale of their lives; demonstrates the actual relations between an individual and history; and shows that some things last, and it's worth thinking about and creating for the future.
